WORCESTER, Mass. — The Algonquin Boys Ice Hockey team started out strong but ultimately fell to the Shrewsbury High School team at the third annual High School Hockey Showdown held at the Worcester DCU Center yesterday afternoon. The final score was 5-2.
Algonquin got an early lead in the first period when Dan Sheehy scored the game’s first goal, but Shrewsbury struck back quickly, scoring two goals within a minute of each other before the end of the period.
In the second period, Shrewsbury added another goal to their lead. It was during the third period, however, when things really began to fall apart for Algonquin. Shrewsbury scored again, increasing their lead to 4-1. Then Algonquin scored a goal of their own. But in a last-ditch attempt to pull their goalie and skate with six player, Algonquin left the net open for one final Shrewsbury goal.
Both teams were aggressive offensively, but defense was key in this game. Though throughout the game Algonquin nearly matched Shrewsbury in the number of shots-on-goal—shooting 20 in comparison to Shrewsbury’s 24—the Shrewsbury defense was far more adept at blocking them, particularly goalie Jim DeZutter.
Penalty-wise, Algonquin players were sloppier than their opponents, racking up three penalties in the third period alone and further hurting their chances for a comeback.
Algonquin is now 0-4-3 overall. Shrewsbury is 3-4-0.
