SHREWSBURY, Mass. –Shrewsbury High School senior Kelsey Giordano said while her family was deeply affected by her father's presence in the Twin Towers during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, her public service ultimately stems from her upbringing.

Giordano's father survived, bringing the family closer than ever and ultimately helping inspire her to give back as much as possible.

For her service, Giordano was one of four students honored by Shrewsbury Youth & Gamily Services with their Outstanding Youth of Shrewsbury award last Saturday.

"I was in the second grade when Sept. 11 happened, but as I grew up I realized how fortunate I was," Giordano said. "I felt grateful, which is part of why I give back, but not the whole reason."

She said her family has always inspired her to give back, nothing that both her older brother and sister were both also involved in community service.

Giordano spends much of her time volunteering for service clubs including Students for a Medically Aware Community and Helping Hands. She also volunteers through St. Mary's and St. Anne's Church in town.

"I wanted to get involved with as much as I could starting in freshman year," Giordano said.

Her other achievements include the Presidential Award for Educational Excellence, a member of National Honor Society, and vice president of the Spanish Nationall Honor Society.

Giordano also participates in theater at both Shrewsbury High School and St. John's High School.

Giordano hopes to pursue a degree in Communications in college at Boston University or Georgetown.
