Shrewsbury's First Family Fit Adventure will be held at Shrewsbury High School on Thursday night.

SHREWSBURY, Mass. – The first "Family Fit Adventure," one part of the $1.4 million grant the Shrewsbury Public Schools received for physical education, will be held this Thursday.

The Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education will provide $1,374,449 over three years and will fund a program named the "Get Fit Adventure."

Patricia Degon, the district's director of health, physical education, and family consumer science, said their goals are to promote 60 minutes of physical activity a day, increased nutrition and to encourage the families of students to lead healthy lives as well.

The grant is expected to purchase pedometers and physical education equipment for all of the schools.

One of the things that Degon said she was most excited about with this new grant is the promise to offer family adventures, three of which will be offered at each school during each grant year.

"I'm confident we'll have lasting benefits for health and well being of our students and community," Degon said.

The first family adventure is set for Feb. 9 at Shrewsbury High School and will be a night of jump roping in conjunction with the American Heart Association.

"Our students will be performing skills and tricks they learn in their physical education classes," Degon said. "We plan to conclude with all of the attendees, students and parents, participating in jump activities."

The Jump Rope Team from the Upton Memorial Elementary School will also perform and all attendees will be invited to participate in our jump for heart health stations.

All donations from the event will go directly to the American Heart Association.
