SHREWSBURY, Mass. – Floral Street School's Assistant Principal Lisa McCubrey has been picked to replace outgoing Principal Todd Curtis.
Curtis will be leaving Shrewsbury after this school year for the Assistant Superintendent job in Sudbury after serving six years as principal. He was selected to fill the opening last month.
McCubrey, who has worked for 19 years in the Shrewsbury Public School system, the last four as assistant principal, will start in the top position on July 1.
"I am confident that Mrs. McCubrey will provide outstanding leadership for Floral Street in the challenging times ahead," said Superintendent of Schools Joseph Sawyer.
Sawyer sought feedback from students, staff, parents and administrative colleagues when looking for someone to fill the principal position.
"The survey data I received indicated that a significant majority of parents and staff members strongly favored appointing Mrs. McCubrey to the position going forward," Sawyer said. "This was very influential, given that this feedback was based upon her leadership at Floral Street during the past four years."
"Among the many strengths cited in the feedback were Mrs. McCubrey's passion for and commitment to students and the school community; her deep understanding of best educational practices; her exceptional organizational skills and work ethic; her outstanding responsiveness and communication skills; and her ability to set high expectations and then to help students and staff meet them," Sawyer said. "The combination of these leadership qualities, her extensive knowledge of the strengths and needs of the school, and the clear endorsement from the school community made appointing her the obvious choice."
Sawyer said the feedback he received not only helped him make the decision to appoint McCubrey, but will help him effectively support her work as she begins taking the responsibilities of principal.
McCubrey was hired in 1993 as a third grade teacher at Spring Street School, where she served in that role for 13 years. In 2006, McCubrey was appointed as an instructional coach, supporting teachers at both Paton and Spring Street Schools. In 2008, she was chosen for her current role as the assistant principal at Floral Street School.
She has served on number committees and leadership councils, and she taught the required "Strategies for Effective Teaching" course for all of the district's new elementary teachers for multiple years.
Prior to joining Shrewsbury, McCubrey had experience as a special education paraprofessional and teacher with the Assabet Valley Collaborative.
McCubrey holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Worcester State College, and she also completed a formal leadership program offered by the Massachusetts Elementary School Principals Association in conjunction with Northeastern University. She resides in Boylston with her husband and two sons.
