SHREWSBURY, Mass. - An elderly woman was killed tonight during a fire on South Quinsigamond Avenue.
Fire was reported at the duplex at 357 South Quinsigamond Ave. around 8:05 p.m. Officials at the scene confirmed one death, but would not identify the individual pending notification of the family.
The fire started in a rear bedroom of the home. Firefighters searched the home as they worked to extinguish the fire, but didn't find the woman - in her bathroom - until the fire was put out.
The cause of her death has not yet been determined. Fire Cheif James Vuona said the woman was on oxygen and may have had a medical issue prior to the fire.
The American Red Cross was assisting the family who lived in the other half of the home with finding shelter overnight.
The State Fire Marshal's office and the State Police are investigating the cause.
