NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Brush fires broke out where I-290 East meets I-495 South at around 5 Monday night, causing traffic delays.

According to the Northborough Fire Chief David M. Durgin, six separate fires broke out in Northborough, and at least two broke out in Marlborough. They extended from exit 24 eastbound up past 495 South. Units from neighboring towns were required to fight the flames.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the fires backed up traffic along Rte. 290 East in Northborough and Marlborough. Police say motorists also caused delays on 290 West while slowing down to observe the fires.

At approximately 5:10 p.m. state troopers closed several ramps on 290 East and advised drivers to seek alternate routes. These ramps were opened at around 5:40 p.m. as the fires were brought under control.
