SHREWSBURY, Mass. – This weekend in Shrewsbury will start with high school sports then including tax help and foreign film festival events at the Shrewsbury Public Library.

The Colonials Girls Varsity Basketball team will be hosting Fitchburg on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the high school gym. The Boys Varsity Ice Hockey team will play Wachusett at 8:30 p.m. at the North Star Youth Forum. Finally, on Sunday, the Girls and Boys Indoor Track teams will be competing in the MIAA State Championship.

On Feb. 18, the Rise Above Foundation will be hosting "Fostering Laughs: A Comedy Show to Benefit Children in Foster Care" to raise awareness and support for its mission to provide enriching activities, opportunities, and experiences to youth in Massachusetts foster care. Fostering Laughs will be held at the Scandinavian Athletic Club and will feature comedians James Dorsey, Dan Crohn, Sarah Blodgett, Sean Sullivan and Sharon Simon. The evening is expected to draw over 250 attendees and includes a silent auction, refreshments and a cash bar. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8. Tickets are $25 or two for $40 and are available at www.weriseabove.org. All proceeds from Fostering Laughs will benefit the nearly 10,000 Massachusetts children experiencing foster care.

Also on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury, there will be an organ demonstration and workshop. "Welcome to the Organ" is for any interested people in the greater community who'd like to learn how a pipe organ works. This workshop will be geared toward children grade 6 and older, as well as adults of any age. This class will be of particular interest to folks who play the piano, but should also be fun for anyone who is fascinated by the organ as a complex machine, or who takes an interest in the science of sound. Because of the nature of this event, it will be helpful to know exactly who is planning to attend the opening session. On Saturday, you can get some help filing your taxes with a trained counselor. Residents may sign up for 45-minute slots between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Shrewsbury Public Library by calling 508-842-0081x3.

The Shrewsbury Public Library's Foreign Film Festival will also continue with another showing at 2 p.m. on Sunday. A French film, "Wasabi," will be aired on Feb. 19 as part of the Shrewsbury Public Library's Foreign Film Festival. The 2004 film follows a cop with a penchant for punching people out when he is called to Japan because the love of his life, who walked out on him 19 years before, died and left him a fortune, a daughter he never knew about and a platoon of hit men on his trail. This film is rated R and runs for 94 minutes.

Locally, the second Annual Cradles to Crayons/Boston Bruins PJ Drive & DJ Skate will take place on Saturday. Donate a new pair of children's pajamas for the Boston Bruins PJ Drive and receive a free public skate pass for a future visit. All donations go to benefit the Cradles to Crayons charity organization. The skate will take place from 3 to 4:50 p.m. at the Navin Rink located at 451 Bolton St., Marlborough. The price is $5 for general admission and $4 rental skates, which are available on a first come, first serve basis.
